After attending this course completely, the students are expected to be competent to analyze texts of various kinds objectively and subjectively. Students are firstly exposed to objective analysis where they analyze texts or discourses in terms of meta-functions: experiential, interpersonal, textual and logical functions. This analysis results in quantitative data of the texts. This lecture is on both objective and subjective analysis of text. Secondly, the students are exposed to subjective analysis where the quantitative data are related to the (social)contexts of the text covering the context of situation, culture and ideology to interpret reasons for the occurrences of the quantitative data. In this ways three aims are achieved, namely (1) what a text means, (2) how it means it does and (3) why it means in they it does. The students are given theories of discourse analysis based on systemic functional linguistics (SFL), skills to apply the theories and positive attitudes to develop during the learning activities. The students are exposed to problem-based, discovery-based and project-based learning. The students' achievements are measured by assigning them to assignments requiring higher order thinking (HOT) skills.
